Allstate Insurance Donates Bait Vehicle to MNPD

Allstate Insurance Company today presented the Metropolitan Police Department with a specially equipped bait vehicle to aid in auto theft investigation/enforcement.  Bait vehicles are used by police agencies in highly populated areas, including apartment complex and shopping center parking areas, where auto theft is more likely to occur.  The vehicles feature technology that allows for them to be remotely disabled moments after thieves try to steal them.

In accepting the bait car keys, Deputy Chief Steve Anderson noted that while auto theft in Nashville in 2007 was at an 18-year low, the problem has not been eliminated.

"There are thieves who continue to look for an easy target, and sometimes that includes going after a vehicle in a full parking lot," Anderson said.  "That is an area where the bait car program comes in very handy."

The MNPD has used bait vehicles for the past few years.  The department is one of 14 police agencies in the United States receiving bait vehicles through Allstate's program.
