Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 22, 2009

Daryl Quintin Shannon, the convicted felon and fugitive shot this afternoon after pulling a gun on Metro Police Officer Marty Reed, has died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Reed, an East Precinct Flex Unit officer in uniform and driving a marked police car, spotted Shannon, 27, outside a market at E. Trinity Lane and Meridian Street at 2:20 p.m. and saw that he matched the general description of a man wanted for a September 15th homicide. Reed asked Shannon to come speak with him, causing Shannon to run into a field that separates E. Trinity Lane and Prince Avenue. While running in the field, Shannon pointed a pistol at Reed, causing the officer to fire on Shannon in self-defense. Shannon, although he was hit in the shoulder, continued to flee on Prince Avenue.

Three Waste Management workers operating a garbage truck in the neighborhood heard the gunfire and retreated to the cab of the truck. Shannon got into the truck with pistol in hand and demanded that they drive him to a hospital. They refused until Shannon threw out his pistol. He ultimately complied. Once Shannon was unarmed, the three Waste Management employees fled the truck. Shannon got behind the wheel and drove a short distance. The emergency brake set by one of the workers hampered his travel. The truck left the roadway and struck a mailbox. It came to a stop and Shannon was taken into custody by officers. He was transported to Vanderbilt and died during surgery.

The gun Shannon threw from the truck, a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol loaded with one live round in the chamber and five in the clip, has been recovered.

Shannon was convicted of attempted second degree murder in 2007 and received a ten-year sentence. He was convicted of selling cocaine in 2004 and received a three-year sentence. He was also convicted of unlawful gun possession in 2004 and received a one-year sentence. Shannon’s arrest history reflects 50 offenses between April 2000 and April 2009. At the time of today’s encounter with Officer Reed, Shannon was wanted for a felony probation violation, domestic assault, evading arrest, and failure to appear in court.

Officer Reed is age 41 and a four-year police department veteran. He has been placed on routine administrative assignment while the shooting investigation continues.
