Sex Crimes detectives early today arrested convicted felon Donald J. Vaughn for the Halloween night stranger rape of a 20-year-old woman on Woodmont Boulevard near Bowling Avenue.
Vaughn, 36, of Kerrington Place in Hendersonville, is charged with aggravated rape and aggravated kidnapping.
Scientific analysis of evidence and investigation by Detective Jason Terry led to the identification of Vaughn as the man who attacked the victim as she walked from her parked car to a Halloween party. The victim said a white Jeep Commander followed her as she drove from her residence to the Woodmont Boulevard area. Concerned about the Jeep, the victim parked on nearby Scarsdale Road. As she walked on Woodmont Boulevard, she was confronted by a man who forced her to the ground and sexually assaulted her.
The meticulous collection of evidence and the analysis of it were critical to the identification of Vaughn, who was then positively identified by the victim from a photo lineup as the man who raped her. Detective Terry learned that Vaughn did have access to a white Jeep Commander on October 31st last year.
Records reflect that Vaughn was convicted of attempted aggravated kidnapping last December and received a three-year probated sentence. He was arrested in that case in January 2005 after a 16-year-old Madison girl reported that she was approached by a man driving a van who propositioned her for a sex act. The teenager said she became scared, began running home, and that the man initially ran after her. She subsequently identified Vaughn from a photo lineup.
“Detective Terry’s absolute persistence in this investigation, combined with the outstanding work of our crime scene experts, have taken a man we believe to be a predator off our streets,” Chief Ronal Serpas said.
Vaughn is being held in lieu of $300,000 bond.
