Chief Ronal Serpas tonight will welcome the 62 citizens who have enrolled in the 21st session of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Citizen Police Academy. The class will assemble at 6 p.m. in the community room of the Hermitage Precinct.
Participants will meet on Tuesday nights for the next 12 weeks to learn about the intricacies of police work from the perspective of veteran Metro officers assigned to a variety of department components. Electives, including a ride along with an officer and basic firearm instruction, will also be offered.
Eight of the 62 citizens enrolled for Session 21 are also receiving training to become volunteer police department chaplains.
Since the police department began offering Citizen Police Academy classes in 1995, 1,075 persons have graduated from the program. Chief Serpas has presided over the graduation of 243 citizens during his tenure.
