FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 5, 2008

East Precinct officers arrested the driver of a stolen truck Tuesday night after she led them on a brief pursuit through downtown Nashville.

Officer Josh Black spotted Jacqueline Walters, 18, driving a 2007 Ford F-150 southbound on Gallatin Pike near Cahal Avenue. The pickup had been reported stolen earlier in the day from the 2700 block of Tucker Road after the owner left his truck running with the keys in the ignition.

Officer Black, in an unmarked police car, activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop Walters on Main Street at North 6th Street just before 8 p.m. She refused to pull over. A police helicopter responded immediately. Officer Black turned off his emergency equipment and followed Walters at a distance while the helicopter pilot reported her location.

Moments later, Walters struck two cars as she ran a red light at the intersection of Woodland Street and Interstate Drive. Both drivers and a passenger sustained minor injuries, but were not transported to the hospital. After crossing the Woodland Street bridge, Walters proceeded on Union Street before stopping at 6th Avenue North. When Officer Black arrived, Walters suddenly reversed the pickup and rammed his police car. Fortunately, Officer Black was uninjured. Walters then attempted to drive over the sidewalk onto 6th Avenue North when she struck the corner of the TPAC building at 505 Deaderick Street. The truck was disabled and officers took Walters into custody.

Walters admitted she stole the pickup. She said she did not stop for police because she was wanted on outstanding warrants for misdemeanor drug possession and underage alcohol consumption. Walters is now charged with aggravated assault, theft of property, evading arrest, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, and vandalism. She is being held in lieu of $111,000 dollars bond.
