A noisy muffler led to Wednesday afternoon’s seizure of two pounds of marijuana from a pickup truck entering I-65 North at Wedgewood Avenue.
West Precinct Officer Edward Escamilla alertly stopped the 1986 Chevrolet S-10 at 4 p.m. because of the loud noise coming from it. As Escamilla approached the vehicle to speak to the driver, he immediately detected the smell of marijuana.
The driver, Melvin Robert Gibson, Jr., 31, of Pittswood Drive in Donelson, acknowledged that he was carrying a “joint.” Escamilla wound up recovering a pill bottle from Gibson that contained six marijuana cigarettes. A subsequent search of the pickup truck revealed about two pounds of marijuana inside a shoebox behind the seats.
“This case is an example of the criminal violations our officers detect after making a traffic stop for something as simple as a loud muffler,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “Officer Escamilla did an outstanding job in taking a suspected marijuana dealer off our streets.”
Gibson is charged with possession of marijuana for resale. He is free on $7,500 bond.
