FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 13, 2007

The man murdered at 12:41 a.m. in front of the Bank of America automated teller machine at 2669 Murfreesboro Pike is identified as Herbert Ray Clayton, Jr., 26, of Rice Road.

The bank’s surveillance system shows that Clayton was in the process of using the machine when he was confronted by a gunman who, for reasons unknown, shot Clayton in the face. Clayton’s body was not discovered for more than one hour. An ATM customer called 911 at 1:58 a.m.

Robbery is considered a likely motive. Clayton’s wallet was recovered from the scene, however it contained no cash. His car, a gray Toyota Celica, was in the parking lot with the engine running when police arrived.

Clayton was an employee of Conway Freight in Nashville. His family in North Carolina told detectives that he was discharged from the military less than one year ago after serving in Iraq.

South Precinct detectives are continuing to analyze images from the bank’s surveillance system.

Anyone traveling on Murfreesboro Pike between 12:30 and 12:50 a.m. today who may have seen any out of the ordinary activity around or near the Bank of America branch at the corner of Murfreesboro Pike and Bell Road is urged to contact detectives at 862-7763 or Crime Stoppers at 74-CRIME.
