Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 12, 2007

An apparent drunk driver who fled from police and then crashed his car on the interstate during the night is now in the Metro Jail on charges of DUI, evading arrest, and driving without a license.

Charles Carlos Chatman, 39, of Lafayette Street, driving a Chevrolet pickup truck, was seen at 1:25 a.m. running stop signs on Cleveland Street at Lischey Avenue & Cleveland Street at Meridian Street. East Precinct Officer Bruce Guldeman activated his emergency equipment and tried to stop Chatman. Chatman initially pulled over and started to get out of his car. He then took off and traveled at speeds under 50 mph to I-24, where he accelerated up to 70 mph. Chatman drove into a construction area with heavy traffic. Given the traffic conditions, a supervisor ordered that the pursuit be terminated and Guldeman shut down his blue lights and siren. One-half to three-quarters of a mile later, Chatman lost control of the pickup truck while attempting to pass another vehicle on I-24 west at the I-65 junction. He struck a retaining wall and then a rock wall, causing the truck to flip. Chatman appeared intoxicated and beer cans were visible in and around the truck.

Chatman was treated at a hospital for non-critical injuries and released. He is being held in lieu of $17,000 bond.
