Metro Police patch

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 7, 2007

The man charged with Saturday’s 5:35 a.m. shooting at 2nd Avenue & Broadway is a convicted felon (cocaine offenses) who has been charged by Metro Police with 89 crimes over the past 19 years. In fact, at the time of his arrest Saturday, Roderick Chadwick, 37, was free on bond on a variety of drug and related offenses from 2005, 2006, and March of this year. Chadwick is now jailed in lieu of $400,000 bond on two counts of aggravated assault.

Early Saturday, Ceneka Shaw and Charles Marshall, both 30, had left the after-hours club Faded and were crossing Broadway at 2nd Avenue when a car with Chadwick inside pulled into a nearby parking lot. Chadwick, who did not know Shaw or Marshall, began arguing with them over some women who were standing nearby. During the argument, Chadwick went back to the car, retrieved a pistol, and started shooting. Shaw was struck in the leg. Marshall was not injured.

Officers who were keeping a close eye on 2nd Avenue heard the shots and saw Chadwick’s car flee the area. The car was stopped by police on 4th Avenue North near Demonbreun Street. A pistol and ammunition were recovered from the vehicle. During the investigation, a worker at a nearby construction site reported that an object was thrown from the car onto the construction yard. A police dog responded and located a second gun that had been discarded.

Chadwick was subsequently identified as the shooter by those at the scene.

“Chadwick’s history strongly suggests that he is a significant threat to law and order, not only downtown, but in various parts of Nashville,” Chief Ronal Serpas said. “The officers and detectives on duty just before sunrise Saturday did an excellent job in taking him into custody and finding the two guns.”

Chadwick may also face federal prosecution for being a convicted felon in possession of firearms.
