The man fatally wounded Monday evening outside 3005 Batavia Street is identified as Montrell Deshawn Stewart, 21, of Herman Street.
As Stewart and three friends were walking on Batavia Street at 7:35 p.m., shots were fired at them from what is believed to have been a champagne colored Chevrolet Malibu. Stewart was hit in the shoulder and died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Detectives believe that Stewart was targeted by the gunman and have identified persons of interest who may have been involved. Efforts are underway to locate and interview them.
