FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 17, 2007

Chief Ronal Serpas today personally spoke by telephone with most of the presidents of Nashville’s universities and colleges pledging the Metropolitan Police Department’s assistance as they review and, if necessary, refine any security procedures in the wake of Monday’s tragedy on the campus of Virginia Tech University.

“As I spoke with the president’s today, it was clear to me that security was first and foremost on their minds, and they were very receptive and appreciative of the police department’s offer of assistance,” Serpas said. “It is important that the administrations of our city’s universities and colleges know of our commitment to work with their security staffs to help ensure safety and deal with critical incidents should they occur.”

Chief Serpas has invited university presidents and/or their security directors to meet with him and other police department supervisors on Monday, April 23, at 9 a.m. at the North Precinct.

Universities and colleges contacted by the police department today include American Baptist College, Aquinas College, Belmont University, David Lipscomb University, Draughons Junior College, Fisk University, Freewill Baptist Bible College, ITT Technical Institute, Meharry Medical College, Nashville Auto Diesel College, Nashville School of Law, Nashville State Community College, Strayer University, Trevecca University, Tennessee State University, University of Phoenix, Vanderbilt University, and Watkins College of Art & Design.
