West Precinct Officer John Drake is credited with saving at least six lives this morning when a fire erupted at Riverwood Apartments on Cabot Drive.
Officer Drake was searching for a missing girl when he noticed the burning apartment building at 10:30 a.m. and rushed to the scene. Fortunately, no one was home at the primary apartment or the one above it. Both units were destroyed. Officer Drake quickly turned his attention to the apartments adjacent to the units on fire, pounding on the doors and evacuating a woman and a young girl from a ground floor unit and a man and three boys from an upstairs unit.
Since schools were closed, many of the evacuees were sleeping in, and Fire officials credit Officer Drake for getting them out of their apartments unharmed.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The missing 10-year-old girl was found at a friend’s house.
Officer Drake is one of 28 officers who will be promoted to new supervisory ranks tomorrow morning.
