Two Metro police officers are recovering from injuries received while handling separate domestic violence calls during the night.
West Precinct Officer Chad Barth was struck in the head and briefly lost consciousness as he and other officers struggled with an armed domestic violence suspect on Edgehill Avenue shortly after 11 p.m. Mitchell Scott, 21, fought with officers as they tried to arrest him for assaulting his ex-girlfriend earlier in the evening. When Scott, a convicted felon, was finally subdued, he was found to be carrying a .32-caliber revolver. In addition to domestic assault, Scott was charged with unlawful gun possession, resisting arrest, assault on a police officer, probation violation, and vandalism.
Officer Barth was treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and released to go home.
In an unrelated case, North Precinct Officer Byron Carter was bitten on the leg by a Chow dog at midnight as he approached the front door at 1735 21st Avenue North to investigate a report of domestic violence. Barry Ewing, 19, told officers that his father, Barry Bridges, 49, threatened him with a knife. Bridges was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.
Officer Carter was treated at Baptist Hospital and received nine stitches to his leg.
